Selling a car or automobilia at auction is a lot easier than you may think. Generally speaking, all formalities can be carried out at your home, via the internet or at a time convenient to you.

There are three aspects that you need to be aware of. The reserve, the commission rate and the entry fee. The reserve represents the lowest figure you would be prepared to accept on sale day. It is confidential so no-one else is party to the arrangement and is subject to commission. It is also negotiable, a high reserve will not help sell a car whereas a low reserve most certainly will, the catalogue estimate will be lower and this will create interest.

" During the disposal plans for our motor car portfolio, we interviewed every major London auction house, but it was obvious that Coys have the flexibility, dynamism and best market knowledge to get the job done - which they did.

"

It is always easier to encourage people to continue to bid than it is to get them started in the first instance.

The commission rate (plus vat) is a percentage we deduct from the hammer price. Finally, the entry fee, this covers a number of aspects including cataloguing, printing, distribution and marketing.

Your first port of call is to contact us either by email or by telephone on 0044 (0) 208 614 7888. We can then give you an idea of which of our forthcoming sales will be most appropriate for your lot. We can, at the same time, also decide whether a home visit will be required or if the item can just as easily be consigned over the internet. If a member of staff arranges to visit you then he can go over the details with you when you meet. These will include discussions on reserve, commission and entry fee but will also include a full set of photographs, collection of paperwork and preparation of item prior to sale.

If photographs already exist then a visit may not be necessary. Entry form/conditions of business can be emailed across, completed and faxed back. Images can be emailed and any further negotiations can be taken care of telephonically.

Once the catalogue has been produced, a copy will automatically be sent to you along with a delivery letter detailing location, transport, times and dates.

Any further details are available from the auction department who are available between the hours of 09:30 and 18:30, Monday to Friday and Saturday, 10:00 until 16:00.
